Motion Picture Director, Screenwriter, Producer. He is best known for the 1980's comedy and teenager films "Sixteen Candles" (1984), "The Breakfast Club" (1985), "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" (1986) and "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" (1987). He wrote the screenplay for the popular 1990 film "Home Alone". Raised in Chicago, Hughes was an advertising copywriter and later joke writer for Chicago-area comedians. A stint as editor of National Lampoon Magazine would lead to his Hollywood career. His big screen writing credits include "Mr. Mom" (1983), "National Lampoon's Vacation" (1983), "Pretty in Pink" (1986), "Uncle Buck" (1989), "Dutch" (1991) and "Beethoven" (1992).
