Inspiration for the character "Porgy" of the novel and opera "Porgy and Bess". Little is known of his life other than what was portrayed in Porgy and Bess. Known as "Goat" Smalls was a crippled beggar who traveled about the Charleston slums in a goat drawn cart who falls in love with Bess. Smalls impression on Dubose Heyward resulted ultimately in the first opera to be performed by an all African American cast and included the sensational hit "Summertime". Porgy and Bess was first performed in 1935 and has continued it's run for almost seventy five years. His character of Porgy has been repeated hundreds of times in theaters all over the world.
