OBITUARY

THE CHARITON PATRIOT
Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, August 26, 1926

Ira Jacob Gilbert, only son of Albert and Philena Jane Gilbert, was born January 20, 1860, near Melrose, Monroe county, Iowa, and departed this life at his home in Benton township, Lucas county, on August 19, 1926, aged 66 years, 6 months and 29 days. He died very suddenly after a very short illness.

His father enlisted in the service of his country and died during the civil war when Jacob was but three years old. He lived on a farm near Melrose with his mother until his marriage to Emily Ann Lewis on September 29th, 1881, at Liberty, Missouri. They set up their home near Melrose and to them were born four children: Lester Earl, who died in August 1898, in his fourteenth year; Bert Clarence, Lena Mable, now Mrs. Guy Latham, and one son, who died in infancy in January 1900.

In the spring of 1912, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert moved to their present home southwest of Russell. He is survived by his wife, two children, Bert C. and Mrs. Lena M. Latham, both of near Russell, five grandchildren, two half-sisters, Mrs. Ella Whitten, of Garden Grove, California, and Mrs. Della Hellyer, of Eaton, Colorado, and one half-brother, Wm. Sellers, of Russell, Iowa, and other relatives and a host of friends.

Mr. Gilbert took an active part in the Methodist class which met at Greenville school house years ago: later he associated with the Melrose Methodist church and became an official there. On September 6, 1925, he came with his wife into the membership of the Russell Methodist Episcopal church. They were frequent attendants at the church when health and roads would permit them to make the trip to Russell for church fellowship and for the worship of God.

Funeral services were conducted from his late home on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock by his pastor, Rev. James Walls. Interment was in the Russell cemetery. Thus the community has lost another splendid citizen.

"He rests from his labors and his works do follow him."
