The son of Henry L. & Catharine Rachel (Stein) Moyer, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 29, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 30 as a private with Co. A, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865. He is on the rolls and applied for his pension as "Moyer."

He married Anna Maria Riegel in 1868 in Dauphin County and fathered Charles Henry (b. 11/10/68), Reuben Harvey (b. 10/28/70), A. Kathryn (b. 03/23/73 - married David N. Lower), William Bert (b. 08/29/75), Elizabeth (b. 01/09/78), Jeannie G. (b. 01/12/80), Della (b. 03/30/83), Lucian Daniel (b. 03/30/83), and Laura A. (b. 03/30/83).

By 1870, he was living with his family in Ogle County, Illinois, where they are in the 1880 census as "Myres" and are buried as "Meyers."
