Edward Randolph Stone

E. Randolph Stone, 88, of 315 Belmont Ave., husband of Joanna Batson Stone, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2006.

Born, July 3, 1918, in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Hugh Edward and Maggie Cothran Stone.

Mr. Stone grew up near Ware Place and Possum Kingdom in Greenville County. He was a United States Navy veteran, having served in the Pacific, including Pearl Harbor, before World War II, and in the Army Air Corps in Europe during World War II.

He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a BS and JD, and also studied theology at Boston University. He practiced law in Greenville for more than 50 years, during which time he was a member of the Greenville County Bar Association, of which he was a past president.

Mr. Stone was a communicant of Christ Church for more than 50 years, and served as vestryman, junior and senior warden. He served as chair of the Christ Church Episcopal School Board, was a Converse College trustee, a member of the Poinsett Club and the Greenville County Club. He was an avid kayaker, and one of the early ones in the Southeast, and was instrumental in the Chattooga being preserved as a National Wild and Scenic River.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter and son-in-law, Dena Stone and Brad Benedict of Greenville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger Hugh and Debbie Stone of Greenville, Kirk Louis and Monte Stone of Greenville; eight grandchildren, Jeff Benedict, Kathleen Benedict, Randy Stone, Caroline Stone, Roger Stone, Michael Stone, Kirk Stone, Nick Stone; a sister, Anita Stone Pickens of Greenville; a brother and sister-in-law, William T. and Elizabeth Stone of Simpsonville; and a brother-in-law, R. Donald Willis of Greenville. He was preceded in death by a sister, Annie Grace Stone Willis.

Memorials may be made to Christ Church Episcopal, 10 N. Church St., Greenville, SC 29601; or Christ Church Episcopal School, 245 Cavalier Drive, Greenville, SC 29607.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the residence. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Aug. 18, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Christ Church Episcopal. Burial will follow in Christ Church Episcopal Churchyard.

The family will be at the residence.
