Long Illness. Chris Ziegler Dies. Nearing Seventy, Emigrant of the Nineties Succumbs After Illness of Several Years.

Chris Ziegler, retired farmer, died at his home southeast of town last Sunday evening at 5:15 o’clock. Cancer of the stomach was the cause and he had been ailing for several years. He would have been seventy years old next November.

Christopher was born in Kohler, Germany (sic) on November 27, 1863.

In the city of his birth he was married on February 17, 1882 to Miss Elizabeth Glueck. Mrs. Ziegler died here last November 17th.

Nine children were born to the couple, eight of whom survive; Chris of Detroit, Michigan, George of Topeka, Mrs. George Makins of Onaga, Mrs. Charles Sackrider of Wamego, Mrs. Harold Seiwald, Andrew, John and Peter of St. Marys.

Mr. Ziegler was of a most jovial disposition and the sunny side of life was a gospel with him, even when death was an ever present shadow. The large funeral cortege was a testimonial to the esteem in which he was held.

The deceased and his wife emigrated to Kansas and Pottawatomie in 1890, buying a farm near Wamego. In 1918, they moved to St. Marys and resided on the farm which was purchased from E. A. Coleman. Mr. Ziegler had been a member of the Knights of Columbus for 24 years.

A Requiem High Mass was sung in the Catholic church at nine o’clock Tuesday morning, the Rev. A. E. Versavel, S.J., officiating. Burial took place in Mt. Calvary cemetery, the prayers being said by the Rev. J. V. O’Connor, S.J.

The pallbearers were Peter Schumaker, Joe Schoemann, John Shyne, Claude Ulrich, J. A. Aubert and Jacob Weisbender.
