A celebration of life service will be held for Warren Neal Browning, 93, of Sumner, at 1:30 p.m., Friday, July 17, at Coos Bay Chapel, 685 Anderson Ave. A private graveside service was held June 17, 2009, at Sumner Cemetery.

Warren was born Dec. 18, 1915, in San Bernardino, Calif., the sixth of 10 children of John Leverett and Loretta Mae (Barber) Browning. He died June 14, 2009, in Myrtle Point.

The family moved to Eastside in the early 1930s, eventually settling on the west fork of the Millicoma River above Allegany. Warren attended Marshfield High School, where he lettered in football and track. His senior year, he was a deck hand on the river boat The Welcome. He graduated in 1934. Warren was a U.S. Army, World War II veteran serving in the Battle of Attu in the Aleutian Islands and he received the Bronze Star. He married Doris Marie Crooks Sept. 4, 1952, in Coquille. He spent 39 years of marriage on the family farm in Sumner.

Warren was a longtime employee of Weyerhaeuser, where he built roads and was foreman of the Dellwood rock plant and crusher site when he retired in 1977. Warren was a devoted family man, loving husband, terrific father and a wonderful grandfather and great-grandfather. He and Doris loved traveling around the U.S. after retirement. He was happiest when in the middle of a large gathering of family and friends, the more the merrier. When camping on the family property at the West Fork, he was well known for his pancake breakfasts. His love extended to the many friends who he considered family.

He is survived by two children, Janice Roberts and husband, Jerry of Myrtle Point and William Browning and wife, Candice of Sumner; three siblings, Frank Browning of Toledo, Dan Browning and wife, Doris of Albany and Keith Browning of Lewiston, Idaho; 11 grandchildren, Jose Gregorio and wife, Sarah of Powers, Jeremy Roberts and wife, Natasha of Olympia, Wash., Jason Roberts and wife, Kayla of Salem, Jeni Hannah and husband, John, James Josephson and wife, Rose and Dan Josephson all of Myrtle Point, Jerry Browning of Pendleton, John Browning and wife, Nicole and Lisa Neal and husband, Tim all of Coos Bay and Jake Browning and Hannah Browning both of Sumner; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife of 39 years, Doris and six siblings, Margaret Bremmer, Hilda Humphreys, Elizabeth Wilkerson, Rosemary Huppi, John and David Browning.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Browning Scholarship Fund, Lewis and Clark College, 500 8th Ave., Lewiston, ID 83501-2698 or the Myrtle Point Care Center, Resident Fund, 637 Ash St., Myrtle Point, OR 97458.

Arrangements are under the direction of Coos Bay Chapel, 267-3131.
