George Farley Bush was the son of George Bush and Mary Wolfe.
He married Joanna Springston on February 24, 1842 in Lewis Co., WV. They began their married life in Roane Co. He met with financial reverses there and removed to what is now Gilmer County with his wife and child. They came over from Leading Creek by was of Bee Tree Run to Sinking Creek, bringing all their worldly possessions, which consisted of some bedding, some cooking utensils and a few articles of wearing apparel, on a sled drawn by one horse. Joanna, with the baby in her arms, rode and guided the horse, while George walked and carried a spinning wheel.
After living in Gilmer County for a year, George bought 50 acres of land from Hiram A. Goff and paid for it by days work at fifty cents a day. on this little farm he built their home. After paying for this land he bought another 50 acres from Hiram on the same terms. Later he obtained a patent conveying to him several hundred acres of land. He eventually owned over 865 acres of Gilmer County land.
He was brought up to hard work and only received about three months of schooling in his life.
He and his wife were the parents of nine children. Eight who lived to be adults.
