Much data about Joanna's life differs from the various sources available. Some say she was born in Hatfield, CT, some say Hatfield, MA, and others say Windsor, CT. Even her name. Her middle name is from her mother's family and is sometime believed to be Gaylar. Her Christian name, Joanna, is how it is written today, but on her tombstone it's spelled Jehannah.

Joanna married Peter Mills Jr. 21 Jun 1692 in Windsor. Although his father changed his name from the Dutch to be the first Peter Mills, Peter Jr. begins the Dutch line of Mills in this country. There is also branch from England as well. The couple raised eight of their ten children in Windsor all boys but one. Two boys died in infancy. Three of their sons graduated Yale College and were ministers, one son was a lawyer, and several of them fought in the skirmishes leading to the Revolutionary War as well as the French and Indian Wars. A number of her grandsons followed in the ministry and attended Yale; others were actives in the War for Independence.

Joanna's ancestors on her father's side were from England and instrumental in settling the country known as the Colonies. She preceded her husband in death. She was 90 years old when she died.
