Holton Chipman
Holton Chipman was born January 11, 1799, at Rutland, Rutland County, Vermont, the son of Joseph Chipman and Amy Reed Chipman. He married Lucy B. Hopkins on February 25, 1825. Their first child, Lucy Hokins Chipman was born at Mt. Vernon, Knox County, Ohio. They then moved to Milford Union, Union, Ohio, where daughters, Philenia Rosalie and Rachel Parthenia were born. Cynthia Florilla, the fourth daughter was born in Lewisburg, Ohio. It was at Lewisburg, that Holton was engaged in the business of manufacturing Cloth. Afterwards the family moved to Illinois, remaining there a short time, and living in a cabin on the prairie. They returned to Milford, Ohio where daughters, Austia Ian and Delia Alice were born. They were in Eugene, Vermillion County, Indiana where two sons, Cassius Holton, Milton and youngest daughter, Marilla Alwilda were born. They moved then to Bristol, Elkhart, Indiana where Holton was engaged in the business of running a card machine. It is in Bristol that Holton passed away in 1949. Lucy and the children moved to Goshen, Elkhart, Indiana.
Holton was the uncle of Norton Parker Chipman, the prosecutor of Henry Wirz, the commandant of the infamous Andersonville Prison, where thousands of Union soldiers died.
Holton was the fourth great grandson of Pilgrim John Howland who came to American on the Mayflower in 1620 John Howland was the thirteen signatory on the Mayflower Compact. The Mayflower Compact is said to be the forerunner to the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution.
Holton Chipman reared a fine pioneer family. May he rest in peace.
