Admiral RN, CB CBE KCB GBE. He was educated at Royal Naval College, Osborne and Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. He served in World War I on HMS EXCELLENT from 1914-1915, HMS MALAYA from 1916-1918, HMS SIR JOHN MOORE in 1918 and HMS FORGE. He served as Gunnery Officer on HMS CARDIFF from 1921-1924 and as Commandor in 1927. Captain of HMS BIRMINGHAM, 5 Cruiser Sqn, China from 1938-1939 and served in World War II from 1939-1945. Chief of Staff to Commander-in-Chief Home Fleet from 1940-1942. He was awarded CBE in 1941, CB in 1944 and was created KCB in 1946. He was President of Royal Naval College, Greenwich from 1946-1948 and appointed GBE in 1951. Commander-in-Chief, Allied Forces Northern Europe from 1951-1953. He retired in 1953.
