Struck by flak over target of Friedrichshafen, Germany on March 18, 1944, and while returning, rapidly lost fuel and forced to make a landing at Dubendorf, Switzerland, where the crew were interned. While being held, developed an abdominal condition that required surgery. Later developed complications from the surgery and died in the hospital on July 20, 1944.
Staff Sergeant Robert F Miltner from the same mission also died after landing in Switzerland.
