The son of Frederick Richard & Jane (Ryan) Kitch, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in Macon County, Illinois.


For reasons as yet unknown, he returned to Pennsylvania to serve in the Civil War. He enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Harrisburg August 17, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 19 as a private with Co. C, 201st Infantry Regiment, and honorably discharged with his company June 23, 1865, in Harrisburg.


He married Anna Maria Stringham March 1, 1870, in Sangamon County and fathered Hattie A. (b. 03/??/70 - married William B. Allen), Elizabeth J. (b. 03/16/72 - married James E. Howett), Ezra F. (b. 09/??/74), Henry Albert (b. 02/08/77), Francis (b. 01/??/79), and Emma (b. 03/07/82 or 83 - married William Eckler). On September 15, 1890, he applied for a disability pension and received it. On December 23, 1914, he was admitted to the Illinois Soldiers and Sailors Home but died at his home. He had been a member of Springfield's Stephenson Post No. 30, G.A.R.


On August 22, 1927, Anna applied for a widow's pension and received it.
