Roger Joseph VanderBoom died April 14 in Reedsport, OR, where he resided for 27 years. He was born October 19, 1923 in Belle Fourche, South Dakota to Govert and Emma (Volgt) VanderBoom. He married Christene Volzke June 5, 1948 in Herreid, SD. They celebrated their 55th anniversary in 2003. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp in December 1942, serving as a radio operator in the Pacific Theater of Operation during WWII and achieving the rank of staff sergeant. In 1943,while in the service, he sang with the Fred Warring Chorus. Prior to his retirement, he had a successful career as a hospital administrator, guiding growth of hospitals in Newcastle, Rawlins, and Sundance, WY, in St. Louis and Fairfax, MO, Clinton, IN, and Reedsport, OR. He attended Dakota Wesleyan University and Columbia University, receiving his certification as a hospital administrator. He is a past president of the Wyoming Hospital Association. He was a 63-year life member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a community service organization, and was also a Rotarian. He piloted private planes as a young man, courting his wife by plane from her family's farm near Herreid. SD. He managed Newell Implement Company, Newell, SD after his marriage. He was an expert mechanic and could repair everything from a bicycle to heavy farm equipment. His creativity extended to woodworking and home renovation. He had a beautiful voice and sang solos in his church. He loved to read and had a voracious appetite for learning. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will never forget his love, his humor and his mischievous nature, and will follow his example of dedication and honor. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife; three sons; two daughters; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. April 19 at Dunes Memorial Chapel, Reedsport, OR. He will be buried at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, SD, in June. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association, 2700 Chestnut Parkway, Chester, PA 19013.
