He is the son of Edward Brigand Chastain and Hannah Brown Chastain.
He was married to Alice Martha Carter on 22 August 1822 in Rabun County, Georgia.
Jehu joined the Baptist Church in 1829 and entered the ministry the following October. He was ordained as a Baptist Minister in Rabun County, located in northeast Georgia and bordering North Carolina.
