TYPHOID CLAIMS LIFE OF LESTER DOWNARD

Last rites for Lester E. Downard, who passed away about 3 o'clock a.m., Sunday, Feb. 14, were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Russell Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. J. E. Clark, assisted by Rev. A. E. Beals. A large number of friends gathered to pay respects to their fallen comrade, and floral tributes in abundance were evidence of the high esteem in which he was held by his fellowmen.

A quartet composed of Homer Jeffries, Herbert Ewald, Carl Roberts and P. A. Rockey, beautifully sang "Rock of Ages," "Beautiful Land," and "The Resurrection Morn." Mrs. P. A. Rockey accompanied at the piano. Pall bearers were: Dave Wright, C. H. Cobb, Dale Penfield, Carl Morford, Walter Larimer and C. W. Cunningham.

"Swede," as he was known about town, had been ill for the past few weeks, but not until about ten days ago was it determined that the nature of his illness was typhoid fever. Although his condition had been critical since that time, his death came as a great shock to his friends.

The entire community extends sympathy to the bereaved family in their sorrow.

The remains were laid to rest in the Russell cemetery. Following is the obituary which was read at the services:

Lester Everett Downard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Downard, was born in Lucas county, Iowa, January 21, 1902, and departed this life February 14, 1932, aged 30 years and 23 days.

He was the second child of a family of three boys and two girls. With the exception of three years spent in Detroit, Michigan, he had made his home with his parents in Russell. He was taken down by typhoid fever about ten days ago, which resulted in his death.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his father and mother, two brothers, Clell and Herbert, of Russell, and two sisters, Mrs. Marvin Hubbell and Icyle, both of Des Moines, a number of other relatives and a host of friends.
