Thomas and Isabelle (Kirk) McGilton were born in Dublin, Ireland, Thomas on June 14, 1793, and Isabella on Dec. 25, 1799. They were married in Ireland in 1819, and immigrated to Canada in 1823. In 1825 they went from the Dominion to the village of Mooers in Clinton County, New York, but returned in 1840 to Canada, where Thomas McGilton died May 16, 1846, at the age of 53 years and four months.


Mrs. McGilton, thus widowed, remained in Canada until 1856, when she came with her children to Dunn County, Wisconsin, and settled in the town of Eau Galle on a farm that was operated for her by her sons until her death on Jan. 14, 1863, when the family broke up and scattered.


She and her husband were the parents of 11 children, the eldest of whom was 36 years old and the youngest 15, when they came to Dunn County. They were as follows:


1. Adam, b. April 26, 1820, d. Nov. 27, 1894;

2. Andrew, b. Oct. 23, 1822, d. Dec. 8, 1895;

3. Eleanor, b. Oct. 17, 1823, married James Abbott, and died Oct. 11, 1901;

4. George, b. Dec. 9, 1827, d. in December, 1892;

5. James W., b. Sept. 29, 1829, d. Jan. 17, 1917;

6. Wesley, b. Feb. 17, 1832, d. March 22, 1861;

7. Benson, b. May 20, 1834, d. Dec. 22, 1897;

8. Margaret, b. March 24, 1836, married Stewart Havenstrite, and died June 30, 1909;

9. Isabelle, b. Aug. 11, 1838, d. July 23, 1855; and

10 Shepherd S., b. Jan. 16, 1841, now living in the village of Eau Galle, the youngest child and only survivor of the family.
