The Maries County Gazette, March 13, 1996 – James Southard
James L. Southard, son of Walter and Etta (Pierce) Southard, was born April 27, 1908 in Maries County on the home place and passed away Tuesday, March 5, 1996, at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla at the age of 87 years.
He was a long time member of the Broadway Baptist Church and enjoyed going to Sunday school. On November 9, 1931he was united in marriage to Mable (Pierce) Southard in Paducah Kentucky and to this union one son was born.
James lived on the same farm all of his life. He was raised during hard times and took over his dad's farm work at 10 years of age. He cut wood with a crosscut saw and hauled it to town at the age of 12 for $3.00 a load to get feed for the chickens to take them through the winter. He went to St. Louis to work at a young age and then later worked with his brother Fred doing hard wood floor work. He served his country in the U.S. Army from Jan. 29, 1945 to May 14, 1946. While he was gone, his wife and son kept the farm going. James went through the Great Depression; he was a life long D.A.V. member. James worked at the International Shoe Co. in St. James from 1956 to 1960 and kept the farm going and did floor work on the side with his wife and Walter helping him.
In the early years Mr. Southard, his wife and son went into the hog business, one of the biggest operations in Maries County. James liked working with the animals and loved farm life and being among the stock.
He is survived by one son; Walter Southard and wife Delores of St. James, one sister-in-law; Mary Southard of Union and a host of nephews, nieces and many friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife; Mable on October 13, 1993; four brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m.Friday, March 8, 1996 in the Broadway Baptist Church with Rev. Terry Knight officiating. Music was provided by Dorothy Daniels.
Pallbearers were: Roy Dillon, Forrest Honse, Jody Sanders, William Eickhorst, Charles Redburn and David Southard. Honorary pallbearers were: Junior John, Emmett Dillon, Arthur Dillon, Frank Brown, Ken Chitwood, Charles Smallwood, Gene Matthews, Grover Pierce, David Pierce, Marvin Henson, Adolph Mueller, Wilbur Ragan, Frank Southard, Chester Southard, Bob Wilson and Ira Wilson.
Interment was in the Broadway Memorial Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation.
Arrangements were under the direction of James and Gahr Mortuary of St. James.
