Hambleton was the son of Speed Butler Leas and Orpha Newcomer. He married Amanda Louise Burum on 17 Jan 1940 at the home of her parents in Dinuba, Tulare Co., California with the Rev. S. M. Cheek officiating.

Leas was born in Fresno. When WWII broke out, he volunteered for the U.S. Army where he was a 1st Lieutenant in the 17th Airborne Infantry. He made the jump across the Rhine River into Germany on March 24, 1945. He was wounded and spent his 32nd birthday in a hospital in Brussels. He was then sent to the South Pacific when news arrived that the war had ended and his ship was redirected back to the United States.
Leas received his degrees of Masonry in Las Palmas lodge in 1947 and 1948. He was in the insurance and real estate business with his father Speed B. Leas (Master in 1912) and also did real estate appraisals. Many of his real estate clients were public agencies. He purchased the land for McLane High School, Hover High School, and the U.S. Post Office in West Fresno, just to name a few. On Past Master's night, Ham always gave the charge in the 3rd degree. He also served on the Grand Lodge Masonic Homes Committee for 10 years and was its chairman in 1989.
