* The following story was written by Roland Gaudet's family for a Gaudet Family Reunion in Canada that was held in July of 2003.

Roland Gaudet, the eleventh and youngest child of John Peter and Marie Sophie (Bernard) was born on October 26th, 1915, in St. Edward, known as Smith Road, P.E.I. His brothers and sisters spoiled him with love.

Roland lived and worked on the farm until he was nineteen years of age. It was about this age that he met his future wife, Edna at a house party in Debloise. Edna was there with her mother. Roland tried to make conversation with the shy, pretty girl, but she wouldn't talk to him. At the end of the evening, the lady of the house asked Roland if he would give Edna and her mother a ride home and she jokingly said, "You don't know - some day she might be your wife!" The following weekend Roland left for Montreal where he worked at the convent where his sister lived.

Two years later, his parents wrote for him to come home. They needed help on the farm. He was sad to leave Montreal. Shortly after his return home, Roland started dating a girl by the name of Lorette. They had a little fight and stopped dating. Now, the meeting place for the young people back then, was at the station house. They would gather there, talk, laugh, and wait for the train to come in. Well, this one night Edna was there with her best friend Lorette. Roland was there also. He asked Lorette, "Who is that girl with you?" Lorette said, "Don't act foolish, you know who she is!" Roland soon started making trips to Loeville. He came by horse, sometimes by bicycle, and sometimes he even walked. Roland and Edna were married on January 26th, 1938. Edna was sixteen and Roland was twenty-two.

Roland and Edna moved in with Roland's parents. During the spring and summer months, Roland worked on the farm. In the winter, he would leave to work in the lumber woods in New Brunswick. Sometimes he worked on the railroad. One year, Roland and his brother Arthur went to work on the waterfront in Halifax. Roland was finally able to save enough money to pay off the mortgage on his parent's farm.

Roland and Edna were married just eight short years when Roland became ill. Edna looked after him at home. He would have some good days where he was able to work, but the pain kept getting worse. Brother Arthur came over and took his gun to his own home because Roland had said, "The pain is so bad, I could shoot myself." The doctor finally gave him morphine. This helped him sleep for six hours at a time which gave Edna time to attend to their five children and get some chores done. Alby would come over and sit with him, so would the other brothers, but Roland preferred Edna next to his side. At this time, Edna was pregnant with their sixth child and Roland was anxious for the baby to be born. Sadly, he died on November 21st, 1948, and their baby girl was born just 37 days later on December 27th. The night before he died, Edna cut up a piece of bread into small pieces and spread it with molasses and set it by his bed. Roland liked molasses. He woke up and ate the bread. He was very happy and said, "I think I am getting better." He died at 6 pm that same day. He was 33 and Edna was 27.

Roland's untimely death left a big void in the lives of his children. The oldest just turning 10, and the youngest not yet born. Most of their memories of their dad came from their mom. Roland was a fun loving guy who was loved by his family, nephews, nieces, and cousins. To them, he will be forever young.
