Gone From Among Us
The death of John Bunker, Thursday, the 13th inst., at his home in Upper Placerville, was foreshadowed by the infirmities of age and several months of declining health. But because inevitable, it is none the less for family and friends, a sad bereavement.
This venerable man was a native of Maine, the rugged vitality and saving virtues of which, he was a long-lived embodiment.
He came to California in 1850, and soon thereafter removed to Douglas county, Nevada., which he served as Supervisor, and where he witnessed the fabulous discoveries and rise of the bonanza Kings. Coming thence to Upper Placerville in 1869, he resided there continuously, until his demise at the age of 88 years and four months.
Since the loss of his wife about six years ago, he has resided with his daughter Etta, his son Edwin P. and his grand-son Harry Bunker. Besides these tender and steadfast supports of his declining years, he leaves a married daughter, Mrs. Loynachan, of Chico. They all now realize how long and lovingly they too were led and protected, by a hand that has vanished forever.
As we go to press the day before the funeral, which occurs to-day, Saturday at 2 o'clock P.M., we only know that it will be conducted by Rev. J. Thos. Murrish. It will be from the family residence to the Union Cemetery, where with wife and son who preceded him several years ago, the patriarch of his people and kindred will take his last undisturbed and dreamless rest.
