WHEATLAND, Iowa -- Esther A. Benischek, of Wheatland, and formerly of Oxford Junction, Iowa, died Saturday, January 27, 2007, at Genesis Medical Center in DeWitt. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, January 29, 2007, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oxford Junction, with the Rev. William Kneemiller officiating. Burial will be in the Mayflower Cemetery, Oxford Junction.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Lahey Funeral Home in Oxford Junction, where a vigil service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held one hour before service time on Monday at the church. Memorials may be given to Sacred Heart Church or the American Legion Post.

Esther Anna Ruchotzke was born on November 5, 1923, in Lowden, Iowa, daughter of William A. and Ida Mae (Luettjohn) Ruchotzke. Esther was a housewife and had farmed in Oxford Junction for 60 years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and its Alter & Rosary Society, where she served as president. She was also a member of the ACCW, American Legion Auxiliary, president of the Parent-Teacher Association in Oxford Junction, and she served an office of Archdiocese of Dubuque Deanery.

She is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Zaruba, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Mary Jo Smiley, Anamosa, Iowa, and Beverly (Mark) Valerius, Davenport; two sons, Otto C. Benischek, Decatur, Ala. and Steven J. (Barbara) Benischek, Lost Nation, Iowa; 20 grandchildren; and 26 great grandchildren; and one sister, Sophie (Ralph) Thoene,
Durant, Iowa. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Gerald in January 1948, two brothers, three sisters; and two step sisters. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.laheys.com.
