August married Mary Magdalene Faivre on January 11, 1870, in Louisville, Ohio. They had seven children: Louise Chevraux, Francis "Frank" Chevraux, Charlotte Chevraux (died when a young child), Charles A. Chevraux, Amos Chevraux, Norbert Chevraux and Edmund L. Chevraux.
August retired at age 70 after working for 44 years and 6 months for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. In a newspaper article about his retirement, August was quoted as saying, "Railroading is not what it used to be. If the young fellows today had the hard work that we had when I began in April, 1871, the most of them would give it up."
