Along with Sarah's parents, Bennett M. and Lucinda(Mitchell) Murphy, and others, Jesse and Sarah(Murphy) Cox moved from Tennessee to Osceola, St. Clair County, Missouri. In Osceola, two sons were born: William Ewell "Will" Cox , (16 September 1857) named for Sarah's brother Ewell Dixon Murphy (died 1862, CSA), and John Bell Bennett Cox (15 December 1859) named for Sarah's father Bennett (died 1858).

In 1861, the family fled Missouri after being burned out by pro-Union Forces of "Jayhawkers".

William Ewell "Will" Cox, was an attorney of General practice in Waxahachie, Ellis County, Texas. He later served in the Texas Legislature and became a Justice of the Peace.

He was the father of six children; four of whom grew to adulthood: Sarah Frances; Jesse Thomas; Martha Fernita; and Lula Merle.
