Wanda Lucille Pruett, 85, of West Columbia passed away peacefully from this life to be with her Lord and Savior, with her beloved cat, BJ, at her side on Thursday, October 30, 2008, at the Fountains in Sweeny, Texas. She was born in Louise, Texas, at the home of her grandmother, Mrs. P.B. Cross, on February 12, 1923, to Scott W. and Ethel A. Gifford.

When she was 3 years old, her family moved to Velasco, Texas, where her father was employed at the Freeport Sulphur Company. A year later, the family moved to the "country" town of Clute. They spent seven happy years on a small farm where, according to Lucille, they grew vegetables and "made nice ladies and gentlemen of her brothers and sisters." At the age of 11, the family moved to a prairie home at Stratton Ridge, Texas. They lived there farming for a year. Lucille was in the third grade and made very high scores in her studies. After a couple more moves, the family ended up in Danbury, Texas, when Lucille was 14.

In November 1938, she started going with a young man named Willis Gordon Pruett, the love of her life. On March 14, 1941, Lucille Gifford married Willis Gordon Pruett. They were devoted to each other until Willis passed away October 27, 1998.

Lucille worked for a number of years as a secretary, first for the Freeport School District and then for Mr. Frank Stevens at the Brazoria County Tax office. Years later, Wilis was transferred to Eunice, New Mexico, where she worked at the First Baptist Church. But her "favorite" job was as a homemaker to her loving husband.

Her hobbies were sewing, cooking, but especially oil painting. She became very accomplished in this field. Lucille also was very involved in various church activies at the First Baptist Church in West Columbia: secretary of the Joy Sunday School Class; treasurer for the W.M.U.; and also served as treasurer for the Golden First Family organization. She was a member of the West Columbia Garden Club.

Lucille, having no children of her own, was a loving aunt and surrogate mother to all of her many nieces and nephews. Her coconut and chocolate pies were fought over at every Christmas dinner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Pruett; father and mother, Scott and Ethel Gifford; brothers, DeLloyd and Clyde Gifford; and nephew, Billy Woodruff.

Lucille is survived by her beautiful cat, BJ; niece and caregiver, Carolyn May-Monié and husband, Maurice Monié, of West Columbia; sisters, Thelma Woodruff of Freeport and Venita Mitcham of Pattison; sister-in-law, Pauline (Polly) Gifford of West Columbia; brother-in-law, Guy Pruett and wife, Juanita, of Meterie, Louisiana; nieces, Linda Doolan and husband, Melvin, of Friendswood, Nyla Hatthord and husband, Orville, of Freeport, Eppie Kostak and husband, Tony, of Rosenberg, Mary Neuman and husband, Eddie, of Pattison and Dorothy Thurston and husband, George, of Austin; nephews, Jerry Gifford and wife, Glenn, of West Columbia and Robert Woodruff Sr. and wife, Genvieve, of Freeport; and many, many other nieces and nephews.

The family of Lucille will receive friends on Tuesday, November 4, 2008, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia with the Rev. David Barclay of First Baptist Church officiating and the Rev. Paul Goodman with Capital Baptist Church assisting. Burial will follow at the Cedar Lawn Cemetery in West Columbia. Serving as pallbearers will be Melvin Doolan, Gordon Hatthorn, Vince Hatthorn, Denise Kostak, Mark Neuman and Bobby Woodruff Jr.
