Earl was a Central High School graduate and the University of Evansville, where he studied basic banking.

He was a firefighter for the Evansville Fire Department for 20 years. He was employed at National City Bank in data processing; Atlas Van Lines where he was a warehouse manager; and Chief Inspector of the State Fire Marshall Department for 12 years. He retired from the Department of Labor as IOSHA Safety Penalty Director in 1986. He was a life member of VFW Post 1114, Reed Lodge # 316, and the Scottish Rite.

His honorary awards included: Sycamore of the Wabash, Secretary of State Labor Council, and Outstanding President Award for the State Capitol Optimist Club.

Earl was preceded in death by his wife, Marsha Ford, in 2006.

He is survived by his daughters, Martha Ann Murphy of Greencastle, Ind; Patty Marlene Custis of Salem, Ore.; grandchildren, Kim Izzi, David Scott and Kelly Murphy, Holly Susan, Megan, J.W., and Abigail Custis; great-grandchildren, Luke and Savannah Murphy, Kristopher, Chelsea, and Nicole Izzi and Kadi, Devin, and Sean Koch; sister, Margurite Riber of Evansville; and nieces and nephews.
