John was the eldest son of George and Judith Moore of the market town of Aughnacloy, County Tryone, N. Ireland. George had a shoe making business, which John also followed after migrating to the US, as shown in the 1892 NY state census and the 1900 census. The 1900 census reports he immigrated in 1870 and was born in Jan. 1831. The 1892 state census shows he was 60 by Feb 16, 1892 and living in Hempstead, Queens, NY.
In 1878 he is a witness in Brooklyn, to the second marriage of one of his sisters, Ellen Moore Sloan to James Wilson.
Other siblings also immigrated. Three brothers, Joseph, George and William established lives in St. Joseph, Tensas Parish, Louisiana, and a sister, Mary Ann, joined Ellen in Paterson, New Jersey.
Making family history even more interesting, DNA evidence and dates show that William fathered a child, Abraham Moore, with an African American woman, in 1890.
(Research of Susan Cocker Hopkins, a great granddaughter of Ellen Moore Sloan Wilson.)
