Around 1916, Rufus and his younger brother Thomas left North Carolina and traveled to Georgia looking for work. They had been working in the saw mill industry and thought they would have better luck with Georgia trees. While Thomas ended up making his home in Georgia, Rufus did not stay long and by September, 1918 he was back home in North Carolina working for D. J. Womack at saw milling.
Eventually Rufus turned to farming which he did until he retired.
