Joseph was the son of John Moran and Catherine 'Kate' O'Hara Moran. He had three sisters and three brothers, one of whom died in infancy. He married Marguerite Gallagher on July 7, 1926. They didn't tell their family about their plans until after they were married, because they didn't want to upstage Marguerite's sister Mary who was planning a wedding herself. They had three daughters, Mary Therese Moran Crossin, Katherine 'Kay' Moran Maheady, and Eileen Moran Bradley. He lived in Pittston before he married, but afterwards lived in Wyoming and Forty Fort before settling in Kingston. He worked a number of jobs during his life. In the coal mines, he worked as a laborer, a stableman, and stable boss, caring for the donkeys who hauled the coal, as his father had done. He also worked as railroad laborer, a chauffeur, a carpenter, a worker for the Works Progress Administration, a federal worker for the IRS, and as a bartender in a bar owned by his brother John. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in the late 1960s, and it ultimately claimed his life on Valentine's Day at the age of 75.
