The following bio is from the dedication ceremonies of a historical marker at the grave of James S Maverick, recognizing his service as President General of the Sons of the Republic of Texas, at 5 PM, on June 5, 2004, at San Jose Burial Park.

"James Slayden Maverick was the son of Albert Maverick and Jane Maury, and was the last surviving Grandson of Samuel Augustus Maverick, who was elected by the men in the Alamo to the Constitutional Convention at Washington-on-the-Brazos, where he was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence.

James S. Maverick attended Texas A&M University and graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1913, and was named Outstanding Alumnus. For 40 years he operated the Sunshine Ranch which was a dairy farm producing Sunshine Certified Milk. He served as a Director of the San Antonio Livestock Exposition, the Taxpayers League of San Antonio, and the San Antonio Little Theater. He served as President of the San Antonio Milk Producers Association, the Conopus Club, The Texas Pioneer Association, and the Los Angeles Heights School Board in San Antonio. Having participated in the first Battle of Flowers Parade in 1891, he was invited back in 1981 to be the Parade Grand Marshal. Maverick authored a number of booklets, including: "Memories," a book of reminiscences about growing up in San Antonio with Alamo Plaza as a playground. He edited "A Maverick Abroad - Foot Travels in England and France, 1876," composed from the diaries of his father.

James Maverick was active in the Sons of the Republic of Texas and served as President General from 1954 through 1955. In 1969 he became a Knight of San Jacinto and later served as Knight Commander. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and St Mark Episcopal Church.

James S Maverick was preceded in death by his wife Hazel Davis, and their daughter Hazel Dean Maverick Stengele."
