WILLIAM KYLE OWEN Former Dallas Sidekicks player: - April 12, 2003

William Kyle Owen, 29, a coach for the Dallas Texans soccer club and former Dallas Sidekicks forward, died early Friday from injuries after an accident in McKinney.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Restland Funeral Home, 9220 Restland Road. Steve Wagner, the Sidekicks' chaplain, will officiate.

The Dallas native coached four teams in the Dallas Texans soccer club and coached two teams of younger boys.

"He was those kids' hero," friend Adam Fox said. "They looked up to him."

Mr. Owen, who began playing soccer at age 5, signed as a free agent for the Dallas Sidekicks professional indoor soccer team in 1997. He played forward in 24 games until suffering an ankle injury in 1999, Mr. Fox said.

Born on June 21, 1973, Mr. Owen attended The Willows Academy in Dallas and Trinity Christian Academy in Addison, and he graduated from W.T. White High School in Dallas.

He attended the University of North Texas in Denton on a soccer scholarship until the program was discontinued when he was a senior.

He then coached for Carrollton United and Dallas Texans soccer clubs. He was a full-time soccer coach even while he played for the Sidekicks, Mr. Fox said.

Mr. Owen's under-16 Dallas Texans team, Red West, is scheduled to play in the Dallas Cup on Monday through Wednesday at Richland College in Dallas. Mr. Owen was looking forward to the tournament, relatives said.

Parent Joe Wells said the team's members stayed home from school Friday after hearing of their coach's death.

"He taught them how to play a game that they'll take with them the rest of their lives," he said.

The Dallas Texans club plans to start a scholarship fund in Mr. Owen's name. Information on donations can be found on beginning Monday.

Mr. Owen is survived by his mother, Nancy Parker; his stepfather, Don Parker, both of Corpus Christi; sister, of McKinney; and 2 brothers of Garland.
