Passed to the spirit world at Brewster, Kansas, February 27, 1897, Clarissa Porter Bancroft, aged 91 years and five days, of old age and la grippe.

Clarissa Porter was born in East Hartford, Conn., February 22, 1806, of English parentage.

Her grandfather on her mother's side served as a soldier in the war of the Revolution. (That would be Thomas Starkweather).

At the age of twenty she was married to Thomas L. Bancroft, of South Windsor, Conn. There she resided until the year 1811 when she removed with her family to Cherry Hill, Erie County, Pennsylvania, where they resided on a farm. From this union seven children were born, four sons and three daughters. Two daughters died in infancy and were buried in South Windsor, Conn. The oldest son, Adoniram Judson, served in the Fourteenth Pennsylvania calvary in the war of the Rebellion, was taken sick, dying in the hospital at Frederick City, Maryland, and was buried there. (At the Antietam National Cemetery). In the year 1865 she met with the loss of her husband for whom she mourned deeply. Her second son, Thomas, died March 10, 1870.

Her three youngest children are left to mourn her loss, Alfred J. Bancroft, of Unionville , Ohio, William of Conneaut, Ohio and Mrs. Mary Calkins of Brewster, Kansas. Since the marriage of the latter in 1868, Mrs. Bancroft has lived with her daughter a great part of the time, sharing the cares and labors of the household, doing with willing hands whatever she found to do and never letting a moment go to waste that could be used for the comfort of others. Her children and her grandchildren were her especial care and her deeds of kindness will never be forgotten by them.

Dearest mother thou has left us
Here thy loss we greatly feel.
But the God who has bereft us
He will all our sorrow bear.
Mary Calkins
