Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. A decorated veteran of the Sardinian Army, he graduated from the Italian Royal Military Academy in 1851 and served with the British Army in the Crimean War. Moving to New York City in 1858, he was a teacher of French and Italian. With the out break of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army and was appointed Colonel in command of the 4th New York Cavalry Regiment. At the start of the Battle at Aldie, Colonel Cesnola was placed under arrest by his superior officer for protesting the promotion of a less experienced officer to Brigadier General. Without Colonel Cesnola his 4th New York Cavalry balked repeatedly when asked to charge a hillside gun battery. Thus on June 17, 1863, his commanding general released him from arrest. Taking command of his Regiment, he entered the battle, made a gallant charge, completely routing the enemy and cutting off nearly 100 men, with all of whom were captured. After the battle, Colonel Cesnola was found in a field lying under his own horse, wounded on the head by a saber and one arm by a minie ball. For leadership and bravery in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor and Brevetted Brigadier General on March 13, 1865. After the war, he was appointed United States Consul of Larnaca, Cyprus, serving (1865-77). Returning to America, he became the first director of the New York Art Museum in 1879 and served until his death at age 72.
