Astronomer, Mathematician, Professor, Author, United States Navy Officer. He was born on September 17, 1854 at Penn Yan, New York, the son of John Randolph Brown. He was educated at Cornell University and the United States Naval Academy, from which he graduated at the head of his class in 1876. From 1879 to 1881, he served in the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey. On October 20, 1883, he became a Professor of Mathematics at the United States Naval Academy where he became chair of the Department of Mathematics and Mechanics. From 1898 to 1901, he was Astronomical Director of the United States Naval Observatory. In 1900, he was Director of the Nautical Almanac. In 1917, he retired from the Navy. Since 1912, he was a member of the Special Board on Naval Ordnance. He authored several textbooks on algebra, analytical geometry, trigonometry and calculus used by midshipman at the United States Naval Academy. From 1885 to 1887 he observed the catalogue of stars for the Berliner Jahrbuch at Annapolis and from 1887 to 1890 at the observatory at the University of Wisconsin. He contributed many scientific articles to astronomical journals, which were from his own observations and research. He died on Thursday, December 20, 1923 in Nice, France while traveling abroad with his wife, Elizabeth Sharp Pettit Brown. He was survived by his second wife and three daughters from his first marriage, Syria Florence Brown Kalbfus, who was married to Captain E.C. Kalbfus, United States Navy, Edith Brown Mirick of Washington, D.C., who was married to C.B. Mirick and Marion Brown Shearer, married to Major Shearer, United States Marine Corps. His daughter, Edith, was born November 1883 in the District of Columbia.
