Everardus was educated in theology at Leyden University, the oldest university in the Netherlands, founded in 1575. He later became a well-known minister of the Dutch Reformed Church in New Netherlands and was know as Dominie Everardus Bogardus. In 1638, he married Anneke Jans, widow of Roleff Jansen. In 1647, he sailed to Holland on the ship "Princess" and was lost at sea off the coast of Wales.
