Heinrich Gerling was born in 1832 in Delbruck, Westfalen, Prussia, son of Johann Heinrich Gerling and his wife AnnaMaria Elizabeth Hoelting. In about 1856 the family immigrated to the U.S. where they settled for a short time in Cincinnati, Ohio, and later moved to Lee County, Iowa.
Henry filed his first papers 12 Oct. 1863, Lee County.

ON 4 Feb. 1858 Henry married Frances Auge, daughter of Charles and Caroline Auge, who had also immigrated about 1856 from Prussia.

Henry and Frances had three children, Elizabeth, Henry John and Antonetta. Henry John died young. Frances died in childbirth at the time of Antonetta's birth.

Henry married Elizabeth Stukenholtz in 1865 and the couple had 11 more children, two of whom died young. For most of his married life he worked at the Atlee Lumber Mill.

Henry died of chronic heart disease in 1913.
