Mr. Marcus F. "Mike" Phillips, Jr., 88, beloved husband for 63 years to Johnnie G. Phillips, entered into rest Sunday, December 25, 2011 at University Hospital. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Westover Memorial Park with Rev. Dr. Emmett "Tip" Carroll officiating. Mike was a member of Central Christian Church, a life member of BPOE, ELKS, American Legion Post 63, a former member of the patch, North Augusta Country Club and Green Meadows golf club. He loved golfing and fishing. Mike served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed in New Guinea. He retired from Georgia Natural Gas after 34 years of service. In addition to his wife he is survived by one son, Marcus F. "Frankie" Phillips III; two sisters, Mary Sapp of Jacksonville, Florida and Betty Moore (Harry D.) of LaPorte, Indiana; a number of nieces and nephews; special friends, Ann and Bobby Attaway, Millie and Billy Faulkner. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marcus F. Phillips, Sr. and Essie R. Aldred Phillips; three sisters, Dorothy P. Cheek, Margaret P. Thaxton and Helen P. Timmerman and two nephews, Bill Sapp and Marcus Moore. Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors.
