Francis Wainwright, merchant, settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts.

The archive of the Massachusetts Town Records and the Ipswich Church records have listed Francis' death as May 19, 1692 in Salem, which would place his birth year as about 1616. As you can see in the gravestone photograph, his "grave was located and tablet restored in 1894" as written on bottom of his stone (tablet). It is my guess that at this time, the "2" couldn't be read effectively or was simply mis-transcribed when the stone was restored as it now reads "19 of May 1699".

Francis was living under apprenticeship with Alexander Knight at Chelmsford, Essex, England. He immigrated with this Alexander Knight in 1630.

He was a voter in town affairs, a commoner; soldier in the Pequot War of 1637; soldiered against the Indians, 1642; was a Corporal in Major Denison's Company, 1664; signed a loyalist petition, 1666; transferred property, 1671; became a freeman, 1671; and served in King Philip's War.

His first wife was Philippa Sewall, daughter of George Sewall of Hasted, Essex, England.

After her death, October 9, 1669, he married Hannah Hicks, who survived him. Hannah later became the second wife of Daniel Epes in 1705.

Francis Wainwright died, "suddenly, in Salem, Massachusetts, while there on business, May 19." His will is in the Suffolk Registry.

He was a "wealthy, useful and respectable merchant' diligent and sagacious." Francis was a much storied fighter in the Pequot war, and noted that... "he was once attacked by two Indians at the same time; while defending himself, he broke the stock of his gun; he then used the barrel, and finally killed them both."
