Businessman. Born in New York City, New York, he was widely known as a soap maker, manufacturer and a philanthropist. He was the son of William Colgate, founder of the Colgate Soap and Perfume Company, in New York. After his Father’s death he was sole manager of the company and renamed the company, Colgate and Company. Prominent in philanthropic work, for more than 30 years he was trustee of Colgate University New York. One of his most noteworthy achievements was the collection of 30,000 volumes of documentary records and reports on the Baptist Church. He died at age 75 in Orange, New Jersey.
