US Congressman. A native of Broderick, California, Johnson attended the University of Nevada before taking a job as a clerk for the Pacific Fruit Express Co. After several years in local politics, he was elected to the California State Senate and served from 1949 to 1959. In 1959 he was elected to the US House of Representatives, representing California's 2nd District until 1975 and then California's 1st District until 1981. He served as Chairman of the House Committee on Public Works and Transportation from 1977 until 1980.
