The daughter of Napoleon Bonaparte Gilbert, Sr. and Mary Jane Aderton, "Ida" married Joseph Barney Wallendorff on 18 Apr 1876 in Calhoun County, Illinois.

He worked as a farmer in Calhoun County. The Wallendorffs were the parents of 8 children, but only 3 survived infancy or early childhood.

Ida became ill with cancer and was confined to her bed during her final months. According to stories that were passed down for several generations, her 9-year-old daughter and namesake, Ida, learned how to cook full meals for the family while her mother was sick. Young Ida later shared memories with her grandchildren about how she frequently carried bowls and pans to show her mom in order to make sure that what she was doing was correct. By the time of her mother's passing in 1891, young Ida was known as a proficient cook.

At the time of her death, Ida was 35 years, 10 months and 19 days old.

She was survived by her husband, Joseph; 2 daughters, Ida Wallendorff and Cindy Wallendorf; and 2 sons, Joseph H. Wallendorff and Dorris Wallendorff.
