Husband of Telitha (Ferris) Hayes (second wife). She was his son's (Jacob) sister-in-law.

He was wounded at White Hall on 16 December 1862, wounded in the left thigh at Gettysburg on 1 July 1863, and was seriously wounded in the neck at Cold Harbor, VA June 1-3, 1864.
He enlisted as a private (at age 31), and was promoted to corporal on January 22 1863, and to sergeant in September-October 1864. He was paroled at Appomatox on 9 April 1865.
