Church founder, Primitive Methodist Minister

William Clowes was born in Burslem Staffordshire, he is related on his mother's side to the famous Wedgwood pottery family and thus in turn Charles Darwin. In 1805 William was converted to the Wesleyan Methodist faith and became a Wesleyan preacher in 1808. However he became drawn to the open air camp meetings held by Hugh Bourne, a style and form of preaching not held in high regard by the Wesleyan Methodist elders, they cast Hugh out of their Church in 1808 because of these disagreements. The same fete was bestowed upon William at the end of 1810 due to his continued association with Bourne and attendance at the camp meeting. William's name was withdrawn from the Wesleyan Circuit Plan and in early 1811 the Primitive Methodist Church was formed, bringing together Bourne's Camp Meeting Methodists and the followers of Clowes know as Clowestites.

William worked mainly in the Northern counties of England, he was a popular, hard working preacher. He brought Primitive Methodism to Hull East Yorkshire in 1819 and it is here that he was superannuated in 1842 and lived out his remaining days. In 1898 funds were raised to erect an obelisk on his grave.
