Born in Arkansas in 1888, 40"-tall William Edmond Ansley enjoyed a 27-year career promoting Buster Brown children's shoes with his Boston terrier Tige. He was in fact the fifth Buster Brown (the first was Major Willie Ray), but made such an impression that many believed him to be the original. In 1901, while travelling with the Chase-Lister theater company, he became enchanted with the town of Hugo, Oklahoma, once the largest circus town in the country, and established a permanent home there. He retired to Hugo in 1935 after the Brown Shoe Co. declared him too old to be Buster any longer.
Edmond was called out of retirement in 1972 for what would be his final appearance as Buster Brown, at the Houston Astrodome. At 84 years old, Edmond was suffering from chest pains, but refused to let anyone know. When he finally collapsed, he was taken to a Gainsville, Texas, hospital, where he later died. He is buried in the showmen's cemetary in Hugo under a shoe-shaped headstone bearing an engraving of Buster Brown and Tige, with the inscription "He was quite a character!"
