PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - Truman H. Gorder, 90, of Platteville, died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 1996, at Southwest Health Center hospital, Platteville.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Lutheran Church of Peace, Platteville, with the Rev. David Hoyme officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Prairie Cemetery, Fennimore. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Bendorf Funeral Home, Platteville, where there will be at International Order of Odd Fellows service at 8 p.m.
He was born on Oct. 9, 1905, near Dodgeville, son of Edward and Martha (Torgerson) Gorder in a family with one older brother, Elmer. Later two sisters, Myrtle and Marie, were born.
Truman attended local schools through the eighth grade. About age 16, he started making cheese near Dodgeville. Later he moved to the Platteville area and made cheese at the Bunker Hill Cheese Factory.
He married the former Sarah Edna Fry on Feb. 18, 1939, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. Shortly after the death of their young son, Edward, they decided to move to Platteville, where Truman began selling insurance.
He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Peace and served on the church council, and the Lily of the Mound International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge 6; served as a Boy Scout counselor; served on the Platteville Common Council; and served as president of the Senior Citizen organization. He enjoyed working with his hands, doing woodworking, fixing-up, working in his yard and having a garden.
He was preceded in death by a son, Edward; his parents, Edward and Martha; his stepfather, Joe Severson; and his brother, Elmer
