He was 79.

Mr. Holmquist, a native of Sweden, owned and operated the Holmquist Hardware Co. for 45 years before retiring in 1940 and turning the business over to a son, H. E. (Rowdy) Holmquist.

Mr Holmquist established the firm in 1895 when he bought out T. J. McNamara. For two years the store was located on the west side of Main St., but in 1897 was moved to its present address at 875 Main St.

Mr. Holmquist was a member of Redwood City Lodge 168, Free and Accepted Masons and the Redwood City Volunteer Firement.

In 1947 Mr. Holmquist marked the 50th anniversary of his marriage July 17, 1887 to Mrs. Selma C. Holmquist, who survives.

In addition to his widow, Mr. Holmquist leaves seven children, Mrs. Laurine Crockett; Mrs. Margaret Mullen, Harry J., H. Edwin and Rudolph C. Holmquist, all of Redwood City; Mrs. Nancy Rytand of San Francisco and Lt. Walter Holmquist of the U. S. Navy in Kingsville, Tex., and a brother, Hjalmar Holmquist, in Cheney, Wash.

Seventeen Grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that friends contribute to the American Heart Fund or the American Cancer Society.
