The Rev. Hugh M. Curran, 89, retired pastor of St. Joseph's Church here, died yesterday in Vianney House, 222 June St., Worcester.
Father Curran served as associate pastor of St. John's parish in Worcester, St. Vincent's in Holyoke, St. Peter's in Great Barrington, Holy Name in Springfield, Holy Cross in Holyoke, Our Lady of the Valley in Sheffield, St. Margaret Mary in Worcester, and St. John's in Hadley. In 1948, he was appointed pastor of St. Mary's parish in Jefferson and became pastor of St. Joseph's here in 1956. He retired from the pastorate in 1975. He also served as a dean of the Spenser Deanery, a post to which he was appointed in 1963.
He was born in Dingle, County Kerry, Ireland, son of Patrick and Catherine (Shea) Curran.
He leaves a nephew, John J. Adams of Springfield, and several nieces.
He was graduated from St. Michael's High School in Springfield and Holy cross College, Worcester, in 1918.
He studied theology at St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, MD.
He was ordained to the priesthood by the late Bishop Thomas M. O'Leary, D.D., bishop of Springfield on May 26, 1923.
The concelebrated funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in Sacred Heart Church, Springfield where Father Curran was ordained. The Most Reverend Bernard J. Flanagan, bishop of Worcester, will be the chief concelebrant. The Rev. Edmund T. Tinsley, director of Family and Children's Services for Catholic Charities in Worcester, will deliver the homily. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, Springfield.
Calling hours at Callahan Brother's Funeral Home, Seven Hills Plaza, Worcester, are 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at O'Donnell Funeral Home, 494 Chestnut St., Springfield.".
