The wife of Henry M. Geiter, both her husband and son Joshua served in the Civil War with the 79th Pennsylvania Infantry, albeit in different companies. Following her son's death at the battle of Chickamauga, she applied for a mother's pension. Typically, the Interior Department would only grant those if the father were dead or so disabled as to be unable to earn a living for his family. Henry Geiter was very much alive and should have been in condition to be a breadwinner except that he spent much of his life in an alcoholic daze. Mary applied on that basis and received her pension.
