At the age of thirty-four, Francis enlisted at Montezuma on August 31, 1864 to serve for one year. He was mustered in as a private in Company C of the 111th New York Infantry on September 1st.

At the time of his enlistment, Francis was a farmer with blue eyes, light colored hair, a light complexion, and he was five feet five inches tall.

He served throughout the rest of the war and mustered out with the regiment on June 4, 1865 near Alexandria, Virginia.
