John graduated from Newburyport High School in 1941. He then attended Wentworth Institute in Boston, Massachusetts. On 2 Sep 1943, he volunteered to join the US Navy. He served in the Pacific Theater. He joined Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 21 in the midst of the New Guinea Campaign and served through the Liberation of the Philippines. He spent most of his time on PT Boat 323, unofficially known as the Newt. His unit was in the Battle Leyte Gulf. He was a Fireman 1st Class. He was released 7 Mar 1946.
After the war, John returned to Newburyport, Massachusetts. He got a job at Standard Garment in Newburyport, where he worked as a mechanic. It was there that he met Sylva Stenport, who worked at Standard Garment as a seamstress.
On December 31, 1948, Sylva Stenport and John Henry Elliott married at John's family home at 37 Green Street, Newburyport, also the location of the Elliott Funeral Home. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Harry Grimes of the Central Congregational Church. John and Sylva had three children, two girls and a boy while living in Newburyport. In 1957, John graduated from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in Boston with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. In 1975, John and Sylva moved to Lithia, Florida. In 1984, John and Sylva took custody of their grandchildren Joyce, Albert and Karla, whom they raised to adulthood. In Florida, John worked for Eckerd Pharmacy.
John died August 23, 2005 in Plant City, Florida at the age of 82.
